Thanksgiving baskets, 2014 version

You may (or may not) remember that last year the Knights of Columbus delivered 410 Thanksgiving Baskets .  This project started about 10 years ago, when the Knights volunteered to provide 40 baskets for a local charity.  Over the years the project has grown and now involves the entire parish.  This year the knights requested donations of baskets and money for baskets to make 443 baskets, and were blessed with enough for 462 to deliver.  For the second time, we were able to help deliver to Joshua Station, a transitional housing center for families.

Here are some photos (and narrative) of our day building and delivering baskets...

 That's a lot of turkeys....
 and canned goods....
 and baskets....
One of the baskets we made--he is showing off that he carried it part way from the car to the church by himself...

"NO PHOTOS!  Geez!"  She was a good helper...
Anther completed basket, headed for the delivery station
This one must be heavier...took two boys to carry!

Wow...that is a lot of baskets....

 Loaded car....
 Baskets delivered!

Joshua Station, from the parking lot.  This year we were able to tour their new 3 bedroom unit--it is pretty cool.  Designed for a single mom and her 7 kids--great use of space and beautifully put together.

How The Boy spent Thanksgiving

Technically I think this is the night before..but the reading material  choice is so, um, interesting...
This also is the day before...abut 3:00, approximately 15 minutes before he said, "um....I feel sweaty and gross...I'm going to go change out of these jammies"
4th grade turkey project:  Write a story about how your turkey is going to hide on Thanksgiving and then dress the turkey accordingly..can you guess who this is?
Thanksgiving morning...in pajamas that were changed into because the others were sweaty..(see above)...having a lollipop for breakfast
In new pajamas (again), helping Mr. IM put the turkey in a paper sack to bake.

Where is The Girl?  Sleeping....or hiding....I'm sure she will appear at some point...

I think the most entertaining part is the parade of pajamas....he kept changing...but never into clothes...today they are all dressed and skiing/snowboarding....and the pajamas are all in the laundry!

Thanksgiving Present

Last year's Thanksgiving post was about Thanksgivings Past...This year I bring to you Thanksgiving Present (not to be confused with presents on Thanksgiving...see last year's post for some of those).

We decided late last week that staying home is the way to go--we have two invitations to join friends, but decided that all of us will benefit from cooking at home and hanging out in our jammies.  And this way we'll have leftoevers....yum!  IM says we all have to get dressed before lunch, but I'm thinking of testing that ultimatum.  The kids and I picked up about 5 movies at the library, so I figure between that and football...we're good.  Especially since we'll probably have to get dressed and leave the house at some point anyway.

Here's our tentative menu...some recipes included below:
Breakfast...hmm..I'm thinking something in the cinnamon roll family?

Turkey (family recipe--see below)
sweet potatoes
gravy
green beans
green bean cassarole
key lime pie (ok, fake key lime)
pumpkin cheesecake
smashed potatoes
rolls
cranberry sauce
stuffing
roasted vegetables

I'm sure I'm forgetting something important...but I think we'll be good!
Turkey--Mr IM's grandma's "famous" recipe:

Key Lime Pie ---My mom actually makes this with sugar free ingredients and makes a strawberry version as well--very tasty! (and easy)

6-8 ServingsPrep/Total Time: 30 min.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (3 ounces) lime gelatin
  • 1 1/2 cups (12 ounces) key lime pie yogurt
  • 1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 graham cracker crust (9 inches)

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine gelatin powder and yogurt. Fold in whipped
  • topping. Spread into crust. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes
  • before serving. Yield: 6-8 servings.

410 Thanksgiving baskets

Last weekend the Knights of Columbus at Mr. Ranch's church organized the assembly and delivery of 410 Thanksgiving baskets.

Like the past several years, we volunteered to take baskets to the delivery location--this year we only put 9 baskets in our car--but still pretty impressive. She doesn't look thrilled here, but it was a very good day.

The best part was that the kids were able to not only assemble baskets, but also hand deliver them to the recipients--a great way to start the holiday season.

Thanksgivings long past

When I was a kid my folks always hosted Thanksgiving at our house.  A lot of years my dad's parents and his younger sister and her husband would come.  My brother and I would watch for everyone to turn off the highway--one year we saw my grandparents drive by 3 times before they recognized the turn and came onto our street.  Ah, the days before GPS.  Other years we had a variety of friends who "needed somewhere to go" or just us (but not often just us, that I remember).

One memorable holiday my younger brother and our uncle decided to fill the "lake" of my brother's train table with water.  It wasn't water tight and blue water (they colored it with food coloring so it would look more realistic) leaked all over my brother's carpet.  My mother was thrilled.

Another year, my aunt and uncle brought my brother a flashlight with fiberoptic threads coming off it.  We were very excited (it was the 80's after all) and spent turns sitting in the hall closet watching the pretty lights. And cramming my 6 foot plus uncle into the closet with my brother to check out the lights. And prying him out. And locking each other in the closet.  And screaming that we were locked in.  Gee, we were well behaved.

There are lots of Thanksgiving stories, but I'm not going to tell them here or now to protect the innocent (or the not so innocent, perhaps)...but if you know me personally maybe I'll share some of them sometime.  Most probably are really only funny if "you were there".

In the meantime, here are some classic photos of Thanksgivings past.  Fortunately, I only have  two years easily accessible--1986--a family game of Scrabble after dinner

From left to right--my mom, Grandad (Dad's dad), Aunt, Uncle, Grandma.  Probably that is the top of my head in the very front.

On right, my Grandad, Aunt, Uncle, and younger brother.  I'm guessing it is my rear end on the right, wearing my stylin red velour pants.  Nice.

The highlight of almost every year was the Family Band.  My dad came across the cassette tape recordings a couple years ago and copied them all to MP3 files...which I don't know how to post here, or I might ...
The 1984 band is actually pictured here, as well as my parent's rockin 1970's furniture.  I'd like to have that furniture now, actually...mine is all falling apart.
My aunt trying to teach my brother and I to play the violin

Grandma helping my uncle

A solo attempt

 Then my aunt's turn

And my brother's attempt--My Boy looks a lot like my brother in this picture--maybe it is the haircut. Or do all 9 year old boys look alike?  Check out the rockin tv on the piano...that was our only tv until I was a junior in high school--we spent many fun filled evenings trying to tune in stations using that antenna. My brother and I used to take turns holding the rabbit ears in just the right place so the other could watch their favorite show, and then trade places for the other's favorite.  Good times.  Now my kids fight when they can't watch different shows on their Kindles at the same time.

My brother, with his domino tower...
Grandad and me, notice the red velour pants again...they most have been my turkey eatin pants (to quote Joey Tribianni).

And here, finally, is the whole band in action--it looks like we shook things up a little--Grandad usually played the French horn, but is on the flute here.

I, unfortunately, am playing the oboe, so my aunt can play the piano.  She could have played that flute, then I could have played piano, but maybe I was showing off.  On an oboe.  Seems unlikely, but who knows the mind of a 13 year old girl, right?  My uncle is on trumpet and Dad on trombone--their first choices, but not their only choices.  Ironically, my brother, who eventually could play all of these (well, not the oboe, perhaps, unless he was under duress) is not participating, as he is "only" a piano player at this point.  My mother is participating by supervising the tape player.

Hard to believe this was almost 30 years ago!

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Fall decorating

Those of you who know us know that I love holiday decorations and that I have a lot...starting in early October the top of my dining room buffet is the showcase, but any flat surface is fair game...

Pictured...let's see..far left, fall colored vase thrown by a former co-worker's husband, some fake pumpkins (purchased at a post-Thanksgiving sale several years ago), a vase with fall (dollar tree) flowers, a cornucopia filled with gourds dried by my parents, orange vases and pumpkin man from Mr. Ranch's grandparents's house, some ghosts...one painted by my grandmother, and a bunch of corncobs and fake leaves...

The Boy decorated this corner for us--lots of faces in this corner.

A nice side benefit of the garden corn project was that I have corn stalks for the front porch--stay tuned and I'll post a picture of the "pumpkin man" who is sitting on the bench these days.

And here are the children helping...looks like a fall decoration/Halloween costume store exploded.

 More work by the children
A nice view of the drying rack
And some more, um, "decor" :)  Wait until you see my Christmas decorations!
