I have to say that the rest of our week was just as crazy as the beginning...We wrapped up the week by (in no particular order):
*Making homemade pitas (twice...Mr. IM said, "How do they keep?" I replied, "Not very well. It doesn't matter how many I make, the children eat them before you get home....")
*Making homemade tomato soup and semi-homemade lentil soup
*Cleaning up the yard in preparation for spring planting and hanging out
*Shoveling snow from patio (both before and after cleaning up yard)
*Shoveling snow into buckets to use to water plants when it stops snowing (always thinking)
*Um...two? Maybe three? visits to the library to get cookbooks, novels, and movies
*Two calls to the library to find out why Hoopla doesn't work right (The answer? It just doesn't...try again tomorrow!)
*Sleeping until 7:30 more than once (But I'm not counting on that for today, as I am the only one home who will let the dogs out)
*Watching several movies (from the library and amazon prime)--Including Dr. Strange (The Boy loved it, I think it was weird), Pete's Dragon (Um, a lot darker than the first version), Ninja Turtles (I didn't really watch), Avengers Age of Ultron (I tried to nap and was caught), The Magnificent Seven (Not what I thought it would be, but it was good, a little violent, but to be expected), Joy (It wasn't what I expected either. It was kind of strange, but good for a free library movie) and I think a couple Lord of the Rings movies, but that was really The Boy, not me.
*Drove The Girl around (she had school)
* Visited the Grocery Store at least three times
*A nice walk to see the red winged blackbirds at the wetlands and other explorations
Annnnddd...now it is the weekend and there is school on Monday. This weekend I'm supposed to retrieve the Girl from her sleepover, go to Life Group (guess I should read at least chapter one...), church, order lunches, pay bills, pack lunches...maybe pack my school bag?
Hope you all had a spring break and that it was marvelous...

More Spring Break 2017
The Spring Break wildness is just unstoppable!
Monday morning we were up, while not bright and early, brighter and earlier than we might usually be. Mr. IM took the Girl to school (sorry kid) and The Boy and I proceeded to DOWNTOWN to go to the Museum of Nature and Science with friends. There is a Viking exhibit there, that with my friend's membership discount, is well worth the trip (as we discussed at length, it would not have been worth the $28 per adult and $15 per student that is advertised on the website). We used the local library Adventure Passes to get some us of in for free, so between memberships and passes, eight of us were able to get into the museum for free and the Viking exhibit for a greatly reduced price.
The Viking exhibit inspired me to sing this song all day: Veggie Tales Vikings Song (fast forward to 1:00 for the real ear-catching portion), greatly annoying my friends. The hits of the exhibit seemed to be: being able to try to lift a Viking sword and seeing one of the 8th-grade teachers from the boys' school (who was working a docent) . We visited "all" the other exhibits, were "trapped" briefly in a lung dissection seminar, and realized that adding a couple more kids to the group would allow us to qualify as a "group". We've decided to form a Home Schooling Cooperative that cooperatively decided to send our children to school, but meet as a cooperative during breaks. I think it sounds perfectly logical.
We also realized that the advantage of the oldest child and youngest child being in different districts than the herd of boys is that the herd stays pretty close together. And, they are now all old enough that we were comfortable lecturing them, giving instructions about "stay in this exhibit" and then sitting down in those chairs that we never understood the purpose of when our kids were younger. ("Oh, this is why there are chairs and benches on the edges and in the middle of every exhibit! Crazy!"). We took the herd to the beautiful balcony where the solar telescopes are and spent quite a bit of time enjoying the view while the boys learned about solar flares. The weather was perfect spring break weather!
We spent a long morning re-exploring the museum and chatting before heading to Chick fil A for lunch. We did drive to the Chick Fil A in Suburbia, I'd like to think mainly because we know where it is and where to park, although I have over-analyzed my motives a few times. It's all good...After lunch, the Boy and I headed home, where I dropped him off for some mindless screen time and I headed to the grocery store...I'm telling you...wild and crazy stuff. I picked up the Girl from track practice, unloaded groceries, made dinner and went to bed early with a book...
Tuesday both the Boy and I slept in (I think I hit snooze about twenty times). We decided this was fine, because it was cold and rainy. We did a little cleaning (none that you would notice), went to the library, watched a couple movies, read books, made pitas, made soup, and generally enjoyed our lazy day. After I picked up the Girl, we had a repeat of Monday night--a little tv and then early to bed with a book. We did have some brief entertainment about "normal" bedtime--Sid the Cat seemed displeased that all the people were headed for bed. He started out in They Boy's room, allegedly sleeping, visited the Girl, woke her up, then proceeded to our room to mew at Mr IM who was changing after working out. He's a busy little cat...
Today's activities include monitoring the temperature in the greenhouse (it snowed last night--typical spring break) and perhaps cleaning the Boy's room enough to walk in and out. We'll see. He is actually still sleeping--I wandered by about 15 minutes ago to see if I could start harassing him to clean and his room is dark and he's in bed...I'd be suspicious if it wasn't so dark outside! Most of the pets are snuggled around the fireplace--Morrison has been out, but Liberty looked at me like I was nuts when I asked her if she wanted to go out (I assume Mr. IM made her go out before I came downstairs, she seems pretty peaceful). This evening is 9th and 10th grade College Prep Night at the Girl's school--it is scheduled from 6pm to 9:30 pm with seminars to attend...I'm thinking that I may attend one set of seminars, but learning how to navigate the Naviance system at 8:30 tonight might not be a priority...(Although there could be parent functions I don't know about...we'll see).

Spring Break 2017--Whoo Hooo!!!
Friday:
Spring break started a little early this year--with a Snow Day! Apparently, the snow day was actually in response to a great deal of my district not having power. The weather in my district was not terrible, but, the Boy's school canceled and the Girl was on Spring Break anyway and was at a friend's house. I realized school was canceled because when I woke up at 4:45 the weather here was rotten...so I checked the district website just in case...and whoo hoo! I had the Boy turn off his alarm clock and we slept until 7 (crazy!). By 8:00, Mr. IM was off to work and I was in the yard, in my pajamas, boots, and an insulated raincoat, using painter's tape to repair my greenhouse. After it warms up, I can (hopefully) remove the painter's tape and repair the damage with clear tape. Yowsers, was it windy! The arch blew over, thankfully the tree didn't become uprooted. I used a leftover tree support to prop it all back up until warmer weather. The Boy and I bummed around the house, made homemade tomato soup and grilled cheese, watched some Lord of the Rings and got him ready for his snowboard weekend. I also emailed all my classes and wished them a great break (and reminded them that they can turn in their papers anytime, using the electronic features on the school website....) After lunch and a shower, I sent Mr. IM (who came home early-ish) and The Boy off on their usual ski/snowboard expedition. I went to Dollar Tree to pick up some 25 cent seed packages (you can never have too many seeds) and to Sprouts to get some veggies and check out their bulk food aisles. I picked up The Girl and her friend and took them to the church Fish Fry for some hanging out with school and church peeps. We did a little shopping in the church gift shop (hello, sale!) and came home with a $5 copy of Mom's Night Out (Trust me, it is a classic on the same par as North Avenue Irregulars....). After dropping off her friend, the Girl and I watched our new movie and called it a day.
Saturday:
Those crazy dogs let me sleep until 7:30! I puttered around the yard (it's pretty wet) and the kitchen. Found a frozen coffee cake for breakfast, make coffee, puttered some more, did some laundry, wrote a blog (Wonder Weeks). I decided it was my spring break, so between laundry loads I "read a book" (ie: napped) on the couch and came to the conclusion we really need to just go buy a couch. Sigh. The Girl wandered in, we had more coffee cake and then went "Swim Suit Shopping"...After successfully finding a suit, we had a late Chick Fil A lunch (yum) and came home. The Girl has spent her Spring Break cleaning her room, resulting in a large pile of discarded and outgrown books, clothes, toys, craft supplies, etc, as well as many "gifts" to family and friends. She inspired to me clean out my closet today (well, part of it...I cleaned clothes, there are still boxes to deal with). We spent a few hours in her room sorting books and had "find what you want" for dinner...followed by renting "Grown Ups 2" while doing laundry. We are wild animals.

Spring Break Sick Break
As usual I had a lengthy list of Spring Break tasks. The boy and I spent all day Monday cleaning his room and the Bonus room--hauling out a bunch of things to give away, throw away, mail to his cousins....
Tuesday we hung out, Mr. IM came home early because he wasn't feeling well, but we didn't think too much about it. Wednesday, the boy spent all day on the couch, coughing and watching movies, only getting up to use the restroom and Mr. IM came home early again. By Wednesday night, the girl felt sick enough to miss volleyball practice...
Have you ever read one of those pioneer novels, where the whole family is sick, and they worry they will starve or freeze, because none of them are well enough to care for the others? Egads, I think we re-enacted that on Thursday through Saturday night this week. The girl stayed home sick and in bed for two days and Mr. IM only worked a couple hours each on Thursday and Friday. Thankfully, we were well equipped with various soups and medications, so no one was in any real danger, but there were no real meal times, or bedtimes...everyone kind of fended for themselves. A lot of crackers and advil were consumed. I did leave the house on Friday morning, to acquire more soup and medication. Today we celebrated being (mostly) fever free (but not cough free by any means) by washing all the sheets and opening all the windows. Hopefully, we've kicked it for now...the list will have to wait for summer break!

A Snow Day menu and activities
One of the beautiful things about Colorado is that it can be 75 degrees one day (yesterday) and blizzard conditions the next (today). Since we're all home, I figured I could cook. Mr. IM even opted to stay home--it isn't very nice out there.
Although the response of The Girl was "more soup?" (We had soup from the freezer last night), it smells tasty enough that I think she'll eat it.
This is a combination of the broth left from the corned beef, a bag of Women's Bean Project soup, a bag of frozen mixed veggies, and the lone tomato that was sitting on my counter.
I'm multi-tasking and also making a couple pans of Chicken and Rice Cassarole, hoping that we have a couple more cool-ish days and can use the oven if I freeze one for later.
For an added bonus, I just popped a couple loaves of whole wheat Oatmeal break into the oven...I may just eat that myself...
Meanwhile, Morrison's status has been upgraded from "forced invalid" to "take it easy", since it has been 19 days since her spay and elective gastropexy surgery. She was allowed to go outside by herself (no leash) and (gently) play in the snow for a few minutes this morning (while Liberty watched sadly from the window). Now she is enjoying her morning nap while I cook.
The Girl is allegedly cleaning her room and The Boy is doing something...hmm.. Mr. IM is trying to convince the media computer to cooperate so we can stream a movie on the big tv...snow days are exciting!

Saturday morning brain dump

It is also volleyball season again, so you can all look forward to lots of posts from inside a gym. So far they've won game and lost one...so it's all good....
That's all for now...I'm off to find one last Empire Burger for the season!

Flashback! Spring Break 2012
In honor of us "winning" the Breck cabin again this year, today's post is a flashback to the last week we spent there--I bring you Spring Break 2012!
Last time we did this over a long weekend--actually over Easter. The kids were off for a four day weekend and I took the time off. Mr. IM"s dad (Grandude) and his sister and her husband met us at the cabin for some skiing and family time. I love this bear...I really want one...
This is the view from the back door--just out of sight is the Blue River. We had great weather...warm spring skiing, nice enough to be outside when not skiing, too! I spent a lot of time on that deck enjoying the sunshine.
One of the four bedrooms. There are three downstairs--one being this one, with not only six single beds (bunk bed style) but also a tv. And Elmo, face down on the floor. Poor Elmo. The other three bedrooms have queen size beds and there are three full baths as well (and I think a half bath?)
View from the living room. The cabin is about 3 miles outside of Breckenridge--in a neighborhood, but far enough out of town that there wasn't a lot of traffic or noise --and close enough that running into town was realistic. From the couch(es) you can see out the windows and watch nature.
This cabin is really awesome...if I owned it, I'm not sure I'd be able to stand renting it out because I'd want to be there all the time. It is a great set up for extended family and/or friends--the big table pictured seats 8 and there are two kitchen bars, seating a total of 7 more people, as well as a couple picnic tables outside. We brought up frozen and easy prep meals so we could do most dinners here and ate lunches on the ski mountain.
Here are the men folk--Grandude, Uncle M, and Mr. IM, enjoying a quiet evening. I think Mr IM even broke down and played cards with us. There is also a tv in this room, but we didn't use it much while the whole family was there, and a fireplace, that we didn't use much because it was so warm!
Oh, and there is a hot tub--big enough for most of us...nice, right?
Grandude rented a mini van, since at this time we'd all fit in one. Now we have a seven passenger vehicle, too, but since Cousin L has joined the family, we'd have to rent a bigger van or take two cars! We all piled in the van a couple times--this time to go to Easter Mass--notice The Boy's tie....Another time we all piled in and went downtown for dinner.
The property is right on the river and has swings to sit on and watch the icebergs float by--it was fairly warm though--note the shorts and fleece...welcome to Colorado!
Ah, this was the night we went into town for dinner. We're sitting in a restaurant that used to be a barge and The Girl was hungry and tired...ready for the camera to be out of her face at least...
She pepped up a bit after dinner--whew!
This was the reaction of the very back seat when the driver tried to exit the parking lot over a curb and the wrong way...ok, this was after the actual reaction, but I made them re-enact it.
And this is The Boy's reaction...hysterical giggles...
After the extended family left, there was some lounging around on the couches and yes, some tv...
Followed by another dinner trip to town--this time to Bubba Gumps...'cause you know, nothing says landlocked ski town like a seafood restaurant...mmmm....Bubba Gumps...
Can you tell I'm excited to go back?

How I spent my Spring Break, 2014
So if you've ever wondered how teachers spend their spring break when their kids have a different week of break..here you go--I seem to have done a lot of dishes and laundry. And didn't grade the things I should have. Oh, well.
Friday afternoon--leave school an hour early (after arriving an hour early for a meeting, teaching two classes, doing two sets of IEP paperwork and grading a stack of essays), stop at grocery store, get home before house guests arrive, do "one last load of laundry" and vacuum one last time. Grade some papers, look over an IEP. Greet houseguests, play with baby nephew, cook and serve dinner, run dishwasher, run clothes washer and dryer, giggle too much, send children to bed, go to bed...
Saturday--Supervise The Boy making pancakes. The Boy grew tired after the first batch (or maybe he was hungry) and wandered off. Run dishwasher, do laundry, let dogs out and in and out and in. Feed pets. Vacuum while everyone else showers. Google activities to do with two tweens, four adults, and a baby...decide both zoos nearby are ridiculously expensive. Remember free historical museum, convince family to go...wait for Mr. Ranch to get home from track practice. Play with baby. Pack cooler. Lunch at Jimmy Johns. Afternoon at historical museum then dinner at Hibachi restaurant. Home....more giggling...watch Despicable Me, bed for all!
Sunday--Church with entire family followed by donuts. Home to do more laundry and dishes while visitors went to outlet mall and to the Uncle's house for awhile. Vacuum, again. Dinner from the grill (hamburgers, yum!) and early bed for the Ranch children. Snacks packed, clothes laid out, bags arranged in "usual" spot. Watch Sunday night tv shows while doing nothing. (Ahhh).
Monday--Up with the children and the house guests. House guests leave for an 8 am appointment with the passport people, children and Mr. Ranch leave for school and work. I sit at the kitchen table with my coffee and ponder what I should do this week (other than grade papers and work on IEP's). Phone rings, house guests are done at passport office...what can they do free inside in town? Ummm..how about the mall?
Shower, meet a friend to see Divergent. Between her movie passes and coupons we see the movie, have a gigantic popcorn, a large water, a ginormous soda, and two candies for less than $6---score!!!! Movie was good...still mad about the ending of the 3rd book though...but I'll get over it, right? Find a sunny spot with car near kids' school, read a novel for an hour. Pick up kids. Take Girl home, put her to bed to fight icky sickness. Take Boy to guitar lesson. Come home to find Girl eating cereal and doing homework. Warm up leftovers, let dogs in and out, feed pets, do laundry, do dishes, put children to bed, watch Monday night tv shows while folding laundry. Read book, fall asleep.
Tuesday--Up with kids again, shower, take car to shop for service. Call Enterprise, get rental car. Stop at library to pick up book that is on hold. Go home, read book, pay bills, (wait for it) do laundry and dishes (seriously...who keeps using dishes and wearing clothes?). Start a bunch of seeds for the garden. Lay out a bunch of seed packages that can be planted in the garden as soon as I turn the soil. Decide I don't feel like turning the soil today, go inside, read a book for a few minutes. Drop rental car, pick up my car, pick up kids, go home, cook dinner, give dogs heart worm meds. Supervise homework, supervise lunch packing, supervise bedtime, read a book...fall asleep.
Wednesday--Up with kids, shower, take Liberty to vet for bordatella booster. Find out they now charge for an office visit, even if you were just there and even if all you need is a vaccination booster. Grrr... Think about looking for a new vet. Take dog home, load coolers with ice into car. One is empty for Costco run, one with dinner food in it for dinner/snacks. Go to Costco...get dog food, dog bones, dog treats, trail mix, and some really yummy pea pod chips. Stop at grocery store, get sandwich meat for dinner. Have lunch (chips and drinks) with another friend. Realize I'm "late" for volunteering at kids' school. Arrive at school, navigate new security features (seem to be less stringent than old security features, but whatever). Sell some used uniforms...children arrive at shop. Supervise their homework and snacks--send The Girl to change for volleyball. Meet a new family from the Chicago area--talk about Chicago, school uniforms, and little girls. Load children into car. Listen to book on tape in car....sigh that we are NEVER going to get to the end of this crazy story! Find school where volleyball game is happening...ask random person outside if this is the right place for volleyball (it is? yay!). Make sandwiches in the parking lot. Eat. Supervise The Boy who is playing Avengers in the Peace Garden (I know, I know) while I read "Thrift Store Saints". Find my coat because it is suddenly very cold. Round up The Boy, find the other parents in the gym, watch the girls win! Drive home without getting lost (excellent!). Supervise snacks and lunch packing. Supervise The Girl starting laundry. Watch the end of Revolution...wonder what happened in the first 20 minutes that meant I was so lost during the last 40. Watch some other Wednesday night tv, send children to bed, read in bed until I realize I'm asleep.
Thursday--Woke up when Mr. Ranch's alarm went off. Told him I'm sleeping in because it is snowing. Drag myself out of bed long enough to tell kids to have good day. Go back to bed until 8:23!!!! Get up, make coffee and breakfast. Let dogs in and out. Watch the snow fall. And fall. And fall...Deal with some family videos on youtube (uploading, sharing, etc.) Write a couple blog posts (including starting this one). Answer several phone calls for "Stacey". Wonder who is using our home phone number and why. Remind self to put number on do not call list again...apparently the list is not working. Open dishwasher...discover "clean dishes" are not so much. Start dishwasher. Start laundry. Drink coffee. Chat on messenger with Mr Ranch about a possible piano and what we would do with this piano if my parents give us theirs someday. Decide we will take this piano for now and give it away or sell it or give it back to its current owner if my folks give us their piano. Call music school, get recommendations for piano mover and tuner. Take video of Liberty playing in the snow. Decide maybe it was a good thing I didn't plant those seeds after all. Worry about fruit trees. Do laundry. Read a book for a few minutes. Pick up kids, take The Girl to the orthodontist for a retainer check then home to do homework. Take The Boy to Cub Scouts. Home. Pack lunches, do homework, clean kitty litter, empty trash cans. Read...sleep...
Friday--Sit at kitchen table with cup of coffee after sleeping in until 6:45 am. At 7:30, receive phone call from The Girl that she forgot her homework for a class that only had 3 grades last quarter. Take a quick shower, take Girl her binder. Take an old TV to the recycling bin at Mr. Ranch's office, pick up his paycheck, to to the bank. Shop for bday gifts for parties in next few weeks, pick up kids, meet friends for a movie (Winter Soldier, which by the way was very good!). Eat more popcorn and soda..yum!
Saturday--Do laundry again, take kids to library, Subway, then Girl's volleyball game (they won again!). Go home, everyone change clothes, take kids to a pool (indoor) birthday party, have dinner with Mr. Ranch and a friend, pick up kids, fall into bed...And that is all for my spring break this year...How long until summer?
